Midway between Syracuse and Rochester is Wayne County. Bordered on the north by Lake Ontario, there are over 150 manufacturing firms in Wayne County, including several Fortune 500 companies. The county is also known as New York State’s top apple producer. Wayne County is a popular tourist destination for those attending one or more of the dozens of festivals and events that take place year-round, including the Apple Blossom Festival in May, the Central New York Wine & Jazz Festival in August, and Savannah’s Potato Festival in September.
There’ll be no festivities for drivers who are ticketed for speeding in Wayne County. A speeding ticket can come with many hidden costs and other consequences. Rather than just pay, a driver should hire an experienced traffic ticket attorney to fight the ticket and either beat the charges or negotiate it down to a lesser offense.
A $150 and $600 fine is just the beginning of the costs for speeding in New York State. Drivers must also pay a surcharge of $88 or $93. Once a driver reaches 6 or more points on his/her license (which can happen with just one speeding ticket), he/she must also pay a Driver Responsibility Assessment (DRA) fee. A DRA costs $300 for the first 6 points plus $75 for each point thereafter. In addition, a speeding ticket can increase auto insurance rates by as much as several hundred dollars per year for three or more years.
Police in Wayne County wrote 3,439 speeding tickets in 2018. More than 35% of speeding tickets were issued on Friday and Saturday. Of those who were pulled over for speeding, almost 15% were also ticketed for other offenses. The most common was driving on a suspended license, which accounted for 23% of such “companion tickets.” It is followed by licensing violations, such as driving without a license (22%) and drunk driving (7%). Nearly all drivers charged with speeding in Wayne County were New Yorkers (93%), the third-greatest proportion of any county. Despite the lack of interstate highways, state police still wrote more than 60% of all speeding tickets.
Drivers need to be well prepared to beat a speeding ticket in Wayne County; just 4.7% of speeding tickets were dismissed in the area last year. The best way to overcome those odds is to hire a skilled traffic ticket attorney.

Tourism is a major tenant of Wayne County’s economy, bringing many visitors from across the state (and from neighboring states) onto the county’s roadways. Wayne County is also within an hour’s drive of many colleges, including the University of Rochester, Cornell University, Colgate University, and Syracuse University. There are no interstate highways, but the county is crisscrossed with more than a dozen state routes, which police diligently watch for those who might make the roads unsafe.
