Schoharie is a largely rural county in upstate New York just west of Albany. Large swaths of farmland comprise the bulk of the county, although many residents also work in the Capital Region, with I-88 providing easy access toward the cities of Albany, Schenectady, and Troy. The southern portion of the county is part of the Catskills Mountain range.
Drivers should avoid paying a speeding ticket issued in Schoharie County. Most do not realize the number of hidden costs and penalties that come with a conviction for speeding. Rather, one should call an experienced traffic ticket lawyer to help get those penalties reduced or eliminated.
A driver charged with speeding in NY can expect a fine of $150 to $600 in most cases. What most don’t expect is the mandatory state surcharge of $88 or $93 that comes with each offense. In addition, if the ticket puts the total number of points on the license at 6 or more, the driver will be charged a Driver Responsibility Assessment (DRA) fee by the DMV. The DRA is a separate fine and costs $300 for the first 6 points and $75 for each additional point. Once the speeding ticket appears on the driver’s record, his/her auto insurer is likely to raise rates by hundreds of dollars per month for several years.
Drivers in Schoharie County received 3,111 speeding tickets in 2018, just slightly more than the number written in 2017 (3,038). Speeding tickets made up almost 40% of all tickets issued last year in the county. Of those, 60% were written on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Just over half of drivers ticketed for speeding last year (56%) went to New Yorkers; the rest went to drivers from out of state. State Troopers were the most aggressive in enforcing speeding in Schoharie County last year, handing out almost 90% of the tickets.

Drivers hit with speeding in Schoharie County would be well advised to fight the ticket and either get it dismissed or reduced to a low-point/no-point violation. Only 2.2% of drivers were able to get their speeding ticket dismissed in Schoharie County courts last year. With such a high conviction rate, drivers should seek the help of a skilled attorney to avoid the worst consequences.
Schoharie County is the fifth-least populated county in New York State and has the sixth-least traffic, with 919,000 vehicle-miles traveled. This is despite ready access to major roadways such as I-88, which connects it to Albany and Schenectady counties to the east and Otsego County to the west. U.S. Route 20 also follows an east-west route just slightly north of I-88. Howe Caverns and other attractions draw tourists into Schoharie. The low vehicle traffic means that drivers speeding and committing other traffic violations—especially those from out of state—are sure to be noticed by police.
A speeding ticket in New York State is a serious matter. Any driver charged with speeding needs the help of an experienced traffic ticket attorney. An attorney offers the best chance of reducing or beating the ticket and thus avoiding the worst penalties. The best part is that, in most cases, those who hire legal representation may not have to show up to court themselves.
