The New York Post has reported on a story that is all too familiar – a pedestrian was struck by a speeding driver.
The driver, Hector Minaya, was apparently speeding through the Inwood section of Manhattan when he hit Edwin Soriano. Mr. Soriano, whom was rushed to Harlem Hospital, was listed in critical condition.
Police later found the driver in a parking garage – weeping while attempting to avoid detection.
A witness had stated that the car was speeding down the road before the crash.
Minaya was taken into custody and later charged with leaving the scene of an accident, criminal possession of a controlled substance, and aggravated unlicensed operator.
New York’s Vision Zero policy aimed to eliminate traffic injuries and fatalities. To achieve this goal, speed cameras were installed, ticketing was increased, and the speed limit was reduced. Although these policies were met with opposition, the goal was noble – the reduction of traffic fatalities. And while the amount of tickets issued plummeted due to recent controversy, it appears that the enforcement of speeding violations will return to this heightened level.
As can be seen from this one tragic example, speeding has dire consequences. Edwin Soriano, having just left a deli, was struck by a speeding car through no fault of his own. There is no debate whether speeding is dangerous, and thus all drivers should take care when operating their vehicles to assure they are traveling at the proper speed.
The fines for speeding tickets, even without aggravating factors, such as a work zone or school zone, are severe.
Fines: Fines range from $150 for a 3 point ticket to $600 for an 11 point ticket.
Driver Responsibility Assessment (DRA): The DRA is an additional fine if you receive 6 or more points on your driver’s license. The fee is $300 for 6 points, plus $75 for each additional point.
License suspension: Will occur upon accumulation of 11 points; may also apply if you receive multiple violations within a given time period.
Insurance Increases: Your auto insurance premium will increase based upon the violation
